Family & Motherhood Health Interviews Read

The Secrets to Being Healthy, Happy and a Badass Momma

I am so excited to share with you an absolute GEM of an interview today! One day I was stalking the inter-webs (as I do) for badass women out there doing their thing while inspiring people around them with their passion. And although social media can be deceiving at times, I am still able to see someone’s persona, authenticity, vulnerability and all around LOVE when presenting their message to the world… and that is what attracted me to this babe of a mommy!

Don’t let me spoil it for you. You’ll see just how amazing she is through this interview. Truly an inspiration! So without further ado, I present to you… Neurotic Mommy!

TLC: First of all, you ROCK! Can you introduce yourself? Who are you and why are you so fabulous!

Jennifer: Hi Christal! Thank you for having me! I’m Jennifer Rose aka Neurotic Mommy. Haha! “Fabulous” … I try girl, I try…  But if I must, I’m fabulous because I’m a Mom and I take care of bid-ness, for the most part, when I’m not making healthy chocolate cakes and cheesecakes.

cheesecake NMTLC: I just love what Neurotic Mommy is all about ESPECIALLY the name! Can you tell us a little about how Neurotic Mommy started?

Jennifer: Thanks so much! It is catchy. Anyone who knows me knows the name fits. It started after I became a Mom. I suffered from severe pregnancy induced anxiety. I’ve always been a bit neurotic, but not as extreme as I was after I gave birth. It’s like something changed within. When you become a Mom, you know you have to take care of another life. To be able to do that and well, a woman must take care of herself. I started to become really conscious about the foods we were putting into our bodies.

I learned about eating plant based, organic and about GMO’s. Instead of turning to medications to disguise or mask the anxiety, I found a positive outlet for what was once negative energy. I knew that if I was going through that, other women were too. It’s hard when you don’t know where to start in making lifestyle changes. I wanted to help. I always say I’m comically worried. I know how ridiculous I can be and I try not to take myself to seriously. So that’s how Neurotic Mommy came about in a nutshell.

TLC: You seem to be able to incorporate all of your passions flawlessly! One of the common beliefs with most of the mommies I encounter is that there’s just not enough time! How have you been able to use time on your side to pursue this passion of holistic health?

Jennifer: Oh gosh, every mommy is right, time is not on our side! But is it EVER on anyone’s side? LOL.

For me, it wasn’t easy at all in the beginning. I was all over the place. I aim to get most of my work and studying done while my son is in school. I’ll even try to get a workout in. But even with that I still sometimes stay up late into the wee hours of the night to finish a blog post, write a paper, or edit photos. I’ve never really been an organized person so to speak. I’m a Pisces so we like a chaotic system.

However, I taught myself how to be manageable with my time. I keep a schedule. I literally write down what have to do for the week. Sometimes I go off schedule but that’s expected because life happens. I just roll with it and try not to let myself get too nerve wracked about it. I’m plugged in 24/7 it just comes with the territory.

TLC: Here at TLC, we are ALLLL about relationships and how they impact our lives, I LOVE how you mention that you really want people to have a healthy relationship with food, we are so about that philosophy! Why did this mission become such a NEED for you?

Jennifer: Being in a healthy relationship with food is so personal. It’s not the same for everyone. We have to treat our relationship with food as we would any other relationship except in this one the individual gets to call all the shots. It’s work, and it doesn’t come easy.

We all have our battles. I was once controlled by food. The bad and not so good for you type food. I would feel helpless and start to self-shame, and have zero self-esteem.

It’s hard. It’s a lot of trial and error and it will never be perfect, but it’s worth it because you get to be who you are without losing yourself. You get to decide what you want to eat, how to treat your body, how you want to feel. Food is looked at like a criminal sometimes and it’s not. Not all food is bad and people need to realize that. It’s not meant to torment people, yet it does. It’s meant to nourish people. Once people realize it’s them who can make a difference I think it becomes sort of an “ah-ha” moment.

There is no magic pill… believe me I checked (lol)!

And it’s not about being skinny or “shredded”. Which is a big problem these days because there is so much out there that grooms the mind to think we need to be or look a certain way.

TLC: What are 3 easy tips would you give any woman who wants to start their health journey but feels too overwhelmed at where to begin?

Jennifer:

  1. I would say start by looking in the mirror and love your flaws, they are what make you, YOU. I know this sounds so corny but positive affirmations really do work. Every day say, “I am well, I am whole, I am safe”.
  2. Read books on health topics that inspires you. There is a wealth of knowledge out there to learn. Get up early and do a workout. It doesn’t have to be a crazy 10k trail, just walk for 15 minute to get the blood flowing.
  3. Increase your water intake and add more steamed veggies onto your plate.I know you said three… but just one more ok?
  4. Also, start reading labels and learn what foods you’re ingesting. If you can’t pronounce it, your body doesn’t need it.
TLC: What’s ONE thing you do every day that aids to your overall fulfillment and joy?

Jennifer: I hug my family. Sounds so corny I know but hugging makes me feel happy and safe. I know when I’m hugging my son he feels it too. You ever get a bear hug and think to yourself, “Wow, that felt good, I needed that?”

TLC: Let’s just take a moment to say how ADORABLE your son is!! OMG! What things do you both enjoy doing together?

Jennifer: Awww, O my G, Thank you super amounts! I’ll let him know you said that as he has quite the charm when it comes to the ladies (lol)! We do so much stuff together; he’s my best friend. He loves to help me bake, but he mostly just does the eating and that’s ok because I love the company. We love to watch movies it’s our thing. We read together (and get this) he loves going to Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. I do not food shop without him! My little man taking after is Momma. =)

TLC: What’s a common myth/belief you hear from the women you help that you’d like to change?

Jennifer: Honestly, the common myth is no woman ever thinks they’re good enough. Every woman I met felt inadequate in some way. I read this book called “Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World.”

In the book the author said “Dewey didn’t do one heroic thing; he did something heroic everyday. He spent his life changing lives.”

The point is, we do heroic things every single day too. Do they go unnoticed, sometimes, but we make a difference in the lives we are meant to make a difference in. No one is worthless, everyone matters.

TLC: What are your favorite things to do to unwind or reset?

Jennifer: I take my bra off! And I love to do restorative yoga. I just recently have been learning how to meditate properly too. I find it hard to clear my head. Being as though I’m neurotic, it’s kind of an oxymoron. On days I give myself off, I will wear my pajamas all day and not feel bad about it one bit.

TLC: Now a fun one!… What are your guilty pleasures?

Jennifer: Do we have enough time to talk about my guilty pleasures??? Well, like you, I do watch the Kardashians and I’ll eat vegan cheddar squares while I do so. My shows on demand are magical, I love my DVR. And I’m so happy it’s fall because we have a good line up this season. We all need a distraction. I love all things comedy because I love to laugh. I read too, those 18th century love novels you’ll see in Barnes and Nobles. I love reading about knights and lords. But they’re not gory like Game of Thrones. This style of writing is very romantic. I love a good love story. Can we talk about The Notebook! (I said that in my best Chandler Bing voice haha)! Chocolate is my boyfriend <3

TLC: Last but not least (actually the most important thing)… What’s ONE thing you would like every woman to FEEL?

Jennifer: Happiness
