Why You Should Make the First Move

by Danijela Jokic Vaislay

You really like him and you are secretly hoping and wishing that he will tell you that he feels the same way, but it has been a while and he is not making the move. Should you wait until he comes forward or should you make the first move yourself?

Here are five reasons why you SHOULD make the first move:

1. You will get clarity.

You can’t know if another person is into you if you don’t ask. If it happens that they are not interested in you, you will have the clarity about it and you can move on with your life, instead of hoping, wishing and dreaming about the future. You will quit going over the possibility of how it would look and feel if something were to happen between two of you and will be able to focus your energy to other aspects of your life. On the other hand, if they are interested, then your confession will help to move things forward much faster.

2. It will boost your confidence.

It takes courage to step out and reveal our feelings to the person we are interested in (the more you care about them, the more difficult it might be to deal with rejection), but once you get bold enough to do it, it will raise your self-esteem and make you more confident about yourself in long-term. Facing our fears leads to growth!

3. You should go after what you desire.

If you would need to apply for your dream job you would not hesitate, even with the possibility of being rejected, but it might not be so when it comes to making the first move with someone you like! You should have in mind that if you do not ask, the answer will always be NO. Whatever the outcome will be, at least you will know that you tried and that you showed up for it.

4. They might feel insecure as well.

We often tend to have so many limiting beliefs about ourselves and how we are not worthy enough, beautiful enough, smart enough… to be attractive to that other person we admire and like so much. Well, that person can have insecurities and doubts about themselves and fear that they would not be good enough, successful enough or attractive enough to us and for that reason, they may hesitate to express their feelings.

5.  If you get rejected you will survive.

As much as difficult it can be to deal with rejection, especially if you care deeply about that person, life will go on and you will survive. You will get over it and in time meet somebody else and fall in love again. Not to mention, if you are not focusing all your attention on someone who doesn’t feel the same way, you can shift your focus to another aspect in your life and new doors might open that you never expected! Dealing with rejection will only make you stronger and wiser.
